The Science of Sincerity

In an interview with TOH’s Anthony D’Alessandro last week at the National Italian American Federation Gala, where Jon Favreau was lauded with the org’s Special Entertainment Achievement Award, the actor director gave up some nuggets of intel on his upcoming summer genre-mash Cowboys & Aliens, starring Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford.

Kitschy high-concept vehicles can be a turnoff on their title alone. Before moviegoers even approached the ticket booth, they could smell the stench of ridiculous in polyester pics such as 1996’s Mars Attacks! ($37.8 million), 2006’s Snakes on a Plane ($34 million) or 2007’s Grindhouse  ($25 million) – all of which crashed at the domestic B.O., despite having credible talent attached.

Jim Morrison

Morrison believed the incident to be the most formative event of his life, and made repeated references to it in the imagery in his songs, poems, and interviews. His family does not recall this incident happening in the way he told it. The book The Doors, written by the remaining members of The Doors, explains how different Morrison's account of the incident was from the account of his father. This book quotes his father as saying, "We went by several Indians. It did make an impression on him [the young James]. He always thought about that crying Indian." This is contrasted sharply with Morrison's tale of "Indians scattered all over the highway, bleeding to death." In the same book, his sister is quoted as saying, "He enjoyed telling that story and exaggerating it. He said he saw a dead Indian by the side of the road, and I don't even know if that's true." Jim’s English teacher once commented, "I felt that Jim was the only one in the class who read Ulysses, and understood it."

Harold Camping's May 21 Judgment Day Prophecy Splits Families as Believers say Last Goodbye to Friends and Relatives

Reports say that many families have been split by the May 21 Judgment Day Prophecy of Harold Camping. The family relocated to New York last weekend in the final lap of their evangelical work, towing there unbelieving and protesting children along. According to sixteen-year-old daughter Grace Haddad, her mother scolded her unbelief telling her that she wasn't going to make it to heaven with her bad attitude.

Gary Daniels, 27, another Camping prophecy believer says he will spend the day glued to the TV waiting for the blessed moment of the earthquake at which believers will be translated. He admits that his family is opposed to his belief but have lately been tolerating him. He says he drove in his Judgment Day van from his home in Newark to say final goodbyes to his relatives and friends in Brooklyn. He expresses deep sadness at the fact that his relatives are sure they will be seeing him again, "I weep to know that they don't have any idea that this (i.e. the Judgment) is coming right at them, pummeling toward them like a meteor."
